Waterfront Development

Once known as Mississauga Point, the site was used from the 1850s onward for commercial and industrial purposes. It was purchased in 1892 by the Canadian Locomotive Company, and the site has been titled Block D ever since the closing of the ‘Locomotive Works’ in 1969 and their demolition in 1972. The site was badly contaminated with petroleum-based chemicals and heavy metals, which provided a barrier for economic redevelopment of the site. It was purchased by Gillin Engineering in 1988, who subsequently sold three quarters of the site to Homestead Land Holdings 2004. The developers decontaminated the site before the construction of three residential buildings, a Marriott Suites Hotel, and Battery Park.

The project was undertaken to mend a giant hole in the urban fabric of Downtown Kingston, to clean up  the contamination on the edge of Lake Ontario, and to turn a previously derelict site into a mixed-use development enjoyed by Kingstonians and visitors.

The buildings demonstrate compatibility in their unique massing and cladding systems using articulated stone bases, unique entrance canopy details and silhouettes. Rooftop terraces and amenity areas provide private relaxation for the residents while high-quality landscape materials throughout the development-- including Battery Park--- define the public realm. The site was kept porous to allow uninterrupted views from the street to Lake Ontario and to create a series of urban courts which respectfully frame neighbouring buildings.
